Umbrella Insurance

If you are ever sued, your auto or homeowners insurance will provide some coverage toward lawyers fees or judgements against you. In some cases, this standard coverage may not be enough. Umbrella insurance will help when your home or auto policies do not provide enough liability coverage. It can also cover you for libel or slander.

How Does Umbrella Insurance Work?

When you reach the limit of your home or car insurance policy, the umbrella insurance kicks in. A $1 million personal umbrella liability policy costs an average of $150-$300 per year. There are options for higher coverage as well. Most insurance companies will require you have some sort of minimum liability coverage before you can add umbrella on top of it. For example, you may be required to have at least $250,000 or auto liability insurance and $300,000 of liability coverage on your homeowners policy before you can get an umbrella policy.
