Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover water damage caused by floods. However you can receive protection from either a private insurance company, or the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which is administered by FEMA.
Flood insurance normally takes 30 days from the date of purchase to go into effect, so make sure to purchase it well in advance of the winter and srping rainy season.
What Does Flood Insurance Cover?
Water damage caused by flood events such as a California Megaflood, Huricane Katrina, a tsunami, or Superstorm Sandy would be covered by flood insurance. Most homeowners insurance policies would not cover flood events like these.
Floods caused by landslides or earthquakes would also be covered by a flood insurance policy. Most earthquake insurance does not cover floods that are caused by earthquakes.
